Bummer! Total Bummer! I found out today that the Return of the Chili Queens festival (scheduled for May 23rd through the 25th) at Market Square was canceled. Bummer! The El Mercado Merchants Association, who sponsor the event, decided to cancel it because the price of police protection for the event was too high. Bummer!
Did I mention that I'm so bummed by this!? When I get bummed out about something, I cook. And I eat. I made this Chipotle-Mole Chili a while back. This recipe makes a lot of chili, a lot of really good chili, with leftovers. It freezes well, so on my search for food to make me feel better, I found some of this chili in the freezer and am nuking it as I type this.
We're still doing the chili cook-off this month on this blog, but now I'll have to change the theme from The Return of the Chili Queens Chili Cook-Off to something else. Let me eat first, and brood over my chili, then I'll let you know.
UPDATE: Lots of people are totally bummed about this, too. I got an email yesterday from a writer for Lonely Planet magazine who
is coming all the way from the UK to cover this event. He's really bummed that it's been canceled. CASI--Chili Appreciation Society International which sponsors over 500 chili cook-offs each year--has a chili cook-off scheduled on the 24th next to MiTierra's Restaurant during the Return of the Chili Queens festival and they're working on getting the Merchant's Association to change their mind and reinstate the festival. So there's a ray of hope! I'll keep you posted.
